Asset Integrity vs Asset Reliability: What's the Difference?

Asset Integrity and Asset Reliability are two concepts that are closely related yet distinct in focus, methodology, and application. Both aim to keep physical assets performing their required functions safely and effectively — but they approach this goal from different angles. What Is Asset Integrity?

Asset integrity refers to the physical soundness of an asset — its ability to contain the substances or withstand the forces it is designed to handle without structural or containment failure. Asset integrity management is particularly important in industries where failure can result in a loss of containment event with safety, environmental, or catastrophic operational consequences: oil and gas, chemical processing, nuclear power, and pressure systems.

The primary tools of asset integrity management include risk-based inspection (RBI), corrosion management, thickness monitoring, fitness-for-service assessments, and structural inspection. The relevant standards include API 580/581, ASME PCC-2, and ISO 16530.

What Is Asset Reliability?

Asset reliability focuses on functional performance — the probability that an asset will carry out its required function when needed. Reliability management is concerned with understanding failure modes, their causes and consequences, and implementing the most cost-effective strategies to prevent or manage them. The primary tools include RCM, FMEA, condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, and OEE analysis.

In practice, asset integrity and asset reliability are complementary. An asset with compromised integrity is unreliable, but an asset can also be unreliable for reasons unrelated to physical degradation — poor lubrication practices, misalignment, operating outside design envelope.
