Development of a comprehensive RCM-based maintenance strategy and asset register for a greenfield SO₂ abatement plant at a platinum metallurgical complex — ensuring regulatory compliance with South African environmental legislation and delivering SAP-upload-ready maintenance work packages.
The world's largest producer of platinum required maintenance strategies for a new greenfield SO₂ abatement plant to achieve compliance with South African environmental legislation. The plant, forming part of the metallurgical complex, was a greenfield development with no existing maintenance history. A structured, risk-based approach was required to establish the full asset register, define criticality and develop maintenance strategies ready for direct upload into the client's SAP environment.
Using Optimal's in-house asset performance management software, the full plant hierarchy was developed and criticality analysis performed across all critical and non-critical systems. RCM methodology was applied to develop maintenance strategies for each system — identifying failure modes, consequences and optimised maintenance tasks. All outputs were structured for direct SAP upload, with activity-based maintenance costs and budgeted lives assigned to technical objects.
The operator received a complete, SAP-ready maintenance strategy for the SO₂ abatement plant aligned to South African environmental compliance requirements. The RCM-based approach provided a defensible, risk-justified maintenance basis from day one of plant operations, with all outputs structured for immediate integration into the client's enterprise asset management system.
